Capturing the Magic | My Unforgettable Experience Photographing a Women's Retreat in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico
When I received the invitation from my best friend and studio mate Kristen Arambula Hernandez of Aki Kin to photograph a women's retreat hosted by her and another friend, Ariadne Hale of The Enchanted Botanica, in the enchanting town of Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, I had no idea just how transformative this experience would be for me as a photographer and a woman. The retreat was titled Aguas Sagradas, Retreat in the Sacred Waters of the High Dessert. Little did I know that this retreat would not only allow me to capture breathtaking images but also witness the incredible power of connection, vulnerability, self-realization, and expansion.
Transformation Through Connection
As a retreat photographer, my role was to document the profound moments of enlightenment that unfolded during the retreat and to also participate in the event. It was awe-inspiring to experience the genuine bonds formed among the women who came from various walks of life. We supported and uplifted one another, creating an safe atmosphere of trust and camaraderie that I have never felt before.
The retreat's activities included cacao ceremonies, sound healing, and soaking in the legendary healing mineral water at Ojo Spa Resorts. Each moment was a step towards personal growth and transformation and encouraged participants to explore their inner selves, fostering moments of self-discovery and empowerment.
A Haven in Ojo Caliente: Nosa Restaurant and Inn
Nosa Restaurant and Inn, nestled amidst the scenic beauty of Ojo Caliente, served as the perfect backdrop for this extraordinary retreat. As a retreat photographer, I couldn't have asked for a more stunning location to document this journey of self-discovery. The moment I stepped onto the grounds of Nosa, I was captivated by its serene ambiance.
Graham Dodds, the chef, and owner of Nosa, was the embodiment of warmth and hospitality. His kindness and genuine care for every guest made the retreat experience truly exceptional. The luxurious and comfortable rooms provided a haven for the participants, offering them the ideal environment to relax and reflect.
Culinary Bliss: Locally Sourced 5-Course Meals
One of the most remarkable aspects of the retreat was the gastronomic journey led by Graham. Each evening, we were treated to 5-course meals that were nothing short of extraordinary. The dishes were not only visually stunning but also made with locally sourced ingredients, which added an authentic touch to every bite.
The experience of savoring these exquisite dishes under the New Mexico sky was a sensory delight. It was a testament to the idea that food has the power to bring people together, fostering deep connections and conversations among the retreat participants.
Healing Waters and Renewal
But the retreat wasn't just about gourmet meals and soulful conversations. Ojo Caliente is famous for its healing mineral waters, and we made sure to take full advantage. We ventured over to Ojo Spa Resorts, where we soaked in the rejuvenating hot springs. It was like dipping into pure bliss, and the women found it to be the perfect complement to the emotional and spiritual journey they were on. Out of respect for the other guests at the hot springs, I did not take photograph there.
A Life-Changing Experience
The women's retreat in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico, was not just another assignment for me; it was a life-changing experience. As a retreat photographer, I had the privilege of capturing moments of joy, introspection, and empowerment.
