What Should My Child Wear for School Picture Day? | Norman, Oklahoma School Photographer

As an Oklahoma School Photographer School, I’ve learned what photographs well and what doesn’t. This post will help you prepare your kiddo for beautiful portraits.

School picture day doesn't have to mean stressing over the perfect outfit or convincing your child to cooperate for the camera. A little preparation goes a long way toward making picture day easy and helping your child look and feel their best.

My school portraits are photographed against neutral backdrops like beige and ivory, so clothing in earthy, muted, and natural tones photographs beautifully and coordinates especially well with the backgrounds.

Here are a few simple tips to help you prepare.

What Should My Child Wear for School Pictures?

Think simple, comfortable, and timeless. Since individual portraits will be photographed from the waist up, the top is the most important part of the outfit.

Colors that photograph beautifully

Earthy, muted, and natural colors tend to complement a wide range of skin tones and look beautiful against neutral backgrounds.

Think:

  • Cream, ivory, beige, and tan

  • Olive and sage

  • Rust, terracotta, and warm brown

  • Dusty blue and muted green

  • Soft blush and muted pink

  • Navy and other classic neutrals

You don't have to stick to neutrals. Just look for colors that feel soft and natural rather than extremely bright.

Add interest with texture

Texture adds dimension to portraits without distracting from your child's face. Linen, knits, waffle fabrics, corduroy, subtle ruffles, and other simple textures all photograph beautifully.

A textured sweater or a simple linen top can make a portrait feel much more interesting than a plain, flat fabric.

What Should My Child Avoid Wearing?

A few things tend to photograph less successfully:

Neon or ultra-bright colors can reflect color onto the skin and compete with your child's face.

Pinstripes and tiny checkered patterns can create distracting visual patterns in photographs.

Graphic tees and large logos tend to pull attention away from your child's expression.

Wrinkled clothing is especially noticeable in close-up portraits, so take a minute to smooth or iron your child's outfit before picture day.

Dark clothing can be beautiful, but it shows lint and pet hair much more easily. If your child is wearing black, navy, or another dark color, give it a good lint roll before they leave the house.

The Morning of Picture Day

This is where a few tiny details can make a surprisingly big difference.

Before your child heads to school, make sure theirface is freshly washed. Check around their eyes and nose for those inevitable morning "crusties" and make sure there isn't any breakfast still hanging around on their face.

Give their clothes one last check for:

  • Wrinkles

  • Lint

  • Pet hair

  • Food or toothpaste spots

  • Anything stuck to the shirt

Does your child wear glasses?

Please make sure their glasses are clean the morning of picture day.

Clean lenses help reduce glare and make it easier to see their eyes clearly in their portraits.

Don't Stress About Getting the Perfect Smile

I'll guide your child and give them a chance to relax in front of the camera. My goal is to capture an expression that actually feels like them, rather than forcing a perfectly posed school-picture smile.

The best portraits usually happen when children feel comfortable, confident, and like they can simply be themselves.
